and-and-and fire!

It's Labor Day weekend. That means family camping thing. *smiles* So that means I'll be more-or-less gone all weekend. I'll be home to check messages at least twice that I'm planning, possibly more often if I can't take the whole tribe for that long.

So, uhm, yeah. Fire. Bronson (I think I've spelled his name right, I've never actually thought about how they spell it) is apparantly under the impression that he'll be in charge of the fires this year.

He's a sweet kid, and he's good with fire (or at least as good as I was at his age, I guess), so I'll let him do his thing whenever he's actually there and the fire needs starting/restarting.

But the first fire is mine. We're almost certainly going to be the first folks there (especially if it isn't raining). And the first will be mine.

And I hope, one morning, I'll be the first one up and be able to take the patient time needed to coax a fire back from coals cool enough to put my hand on.

Because that impressed my Grandfather one year that he came to camping.

And I learned so very much of what I know about fire tending from him, from watching him, from listening to him.

I'm getting all sentimental. I told you that Patti is selling Grandpa's house, right? Did I mention that at least a few years the "Camporee" was held there, rather than at the campground we go to most years? Camp Wade-L, they called it those years.

God. I can't imagine how I going to deal with this -- it's stupid, but it's just making me feel every inch of how much I miss him all at once again, like just after he died, after I realized how much I didn't manage to pour into the eulogy because it was too soon, and my mind too numb.

That isn't what I started out to write.

I started out to more-or-less enthusiastically inform you that I'll be with the extended Rice Clan at Camp Sabrosky. Sabroski? Well, you don't care how it's spelled, you're not from around here. (I think.)

Hell, I'm not even sure how many people bother to read this. I don't pay enough attention to tracking to know that. Anyway.

But, so, yeah. Camping. I'll ramble about other... er... weekend things once I know how they're going to turn out.

And in spite of Mother's opinion, I might take off and go visit Columbus for a day. If it gets to be too much around the fam, I might have little choice.

After all, I really don't want to loose my grip on anything in front of the kids. A few of them actually look up to me, for some misguided reason.

And it would startle the little ones.

So, yeah. As of Noon or so tomorrow, I'll be soaking up as much woodsmoke as I can, and cooking my meals over an open fire, and possibly swimming. And just, y'know, remembering that I wish everyone could have the experience of growing up in a truly close extended family.

Well, and sometimes remembering why it drives me nuts being part of such a close extended family. ;-)
