It's not my place.
At this time, in this situation, it's not my place to even try to offer comfort.
Like as not, it would not only be unappreciated, but also lead to annoyance and possibly outright anger.
I'm repeating to myself that it's not my place.
And I'm going to distract myself from that place that isn't mine from which to speak, by getting back typing up a reply to an e-mail.
Selfish though it may be, sometimes friends are good to have sheerly because you can focus on them in order to keep yourself from acting the idiot.
